Regarding Sanctification and Being Holy (Episode 41)

    • John Calvin lived July 10, 1509 to May 27, 1564 in France

John Calvin

    • Calvin and Luther fostered the Protestant Revolution which was ignited over the issue of the selling of indulgences and papal authority (sacerdotalism-the pope as the mediator between Yehovah and man. Luther believed in a closer and more direct relationship with Yehovah
    • Luther and Calvin did not agree on the issue of predestination
    • Calvin held to unconditional predestination and God’s sovereignty prevailing in all cases

    • Main premise of Calvinism is that God chooses those that will be saved and those that will be lost.Secondarily, Calvinism speaks to God’s sovereignty as the central reason why free will is a non-issue in the case of sanctification
    • “Salvation is accomplished by the almighty power of the triune God. The Father chose a people, the Son died for them, the Holy Spirit makes Christ’s death effective by brining the elect to faith and repentance, thereby causing them to willingly obey the Gospel. The entire process (election, redemption, regeneration) is the work of God and by grace alone. Thus God, not man, determines who will be the recipients of the gift of salvation” (Jonathan Barlow)
    • T=Total Depravity
    • Our nature is devoid of goodness
    • We are prolific in all evil
    • We are never idle in evil
    • Man’s intellect will, soul, flesh is defiled and is pervaded with concupiscence (lust; driven by a strong desire to do wrong
    • Rom. 5:12—12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Rom 5:12 KJV)
    • One act of disobedience has led to death—disobedience is sin. Sin is defined by the Law
    • Rom 2:12-15–12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. 14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. (Rom 2:12-16 KJV)
    • Jer. 17:9—9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jer 17:9 KJV)
    • Mk. 4:11And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: (Mar 4:11 KJV)
      • Counterpoint
      • 10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. (Mat 13:10-17 KJV)
    • Eph. 2:1-5And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) (Eph 2:1-5 KJV)
    • Indeed, the Father provided us the means whereby we have the opportunity to established an eternal relationship with Him through the work of His Son-we had nothing to do with this fix-it was a gift from Father
    • Joh. 6:44,6544 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. (Joh 6:44 KJV) 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. (Joh 6:65 KJV)
    • In other words, Calvinist use this passage to support their claim that man is totally depraved. Thus, we are like a deaf and blind man walking to the edge of a cliff and people are calling out to us to warn us and prevent us from going over the edge. It will only be halted by a physical intervention by someone because he can’t see and hear—his inherent situation prevents him from knowing his situation and thus he is destitute and destined for doom
    • Indeed, there is a calling—a general calling if you will, whereby men are drawn to the Master. Everyone who comes, comes for various reasons. Of those who submit to the general call, only a few truly and sincerely answer that call and assume the mantle (by name and initial acceptance only) of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Of those who assume that mantle, only a precious few become chosen/elect as they do whatever is asked of them by their Master.
    • A brilliant example of this is found in the 6th chapter of John. Most of those who would follow Jesus left—they being the called ones. Those who stayed behind, were the elect apparently
    • What of those who are not called or drawn—it will be sorted out in the Great White Throne judgment—Rev. 20
  • Calvin seems to be setting us up for some type of hail mary football pass. Calvin is saying that man is totally screwed because of sin and indeed, man is sinful and all that good stuff—and thus man is hopelessly destitute
  • For me, the question is not so much that man is sorely destitute as a being and thus He has no hope (as indeed is the case), but the question is how did we get here in the first place and what has God done to remedy the situation. We only know of sin as a result of the law. It is the law that defines what sin is. Thus one must frame all of this from the perspective of the law and not a general observation. Not everyone in the history of the human race has been subject or possessed knowledge of God’s law which in and of itself is the code of God’s standards whereby man must live in order to have any substantive relationship with Him. The issue of sin, however, is whether or not Yeshua’s sacrifice on the cross efficacious to all sin—every sin that has ever been committed—for all men? The answer then seems to be yes—John 3: 16—For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. (Joh 3:16 DRA)—Jesus rebuilt that collapsed bridge that existed between God and man. The rest is up to man
  • Israel in the wilderness paints the entire picture of the Christian and his quest to be aligned with God
  • Sin essentially means that we don’t meet the standards put forth by Yehovah. We are sorely lacking. However, Yeshua on God’s good grace, came to earth to atone for our sins without any effort on our part. Thus every villian who has ever lived; every pagan or heathen that has ever breathed air, has access to Yehovah…that once closed door was opened by the work of Yeshua. Going through that door to Yehovah, however, requires action from us. Does it change our sinful nature? No.Even the most pious of us is prone to that sinful nature and it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and our conscious effort to be disciples of Christ-obedient disciples-that we slowly but surely replace that sinful nature with righteous, godly, nature and behavior
  • There is no evidence that the process of going from a sinful nature to that of a right nature is automatic or inputted. We see it evident in our lives. We make the conscious effort to change our ways and the Holy Spirit provides us the means in which to overcome that nature. Overcoming
