In recent weeks, newspapers, tabloids, news broadcasts, television shows, and social media have been abuzz about the young entertainer Miley Cyrus’ slew of overt sexually charged performances and interviews. I learned of a video that was floating around on YouTube (that had gone viral) that documented one of Miley’s performances on some type of awards show. Curious as to what all the buzz was about, I stupidly pulled up the video. Needless to say, I was appalled at the images of Miley scantily clad and gyrating on stage with other scantily clad women who were allowing Miley to objectify them in ways that I will not discuss here.
I was upset with myself that I stooped to the level of actually taking the time to pull up such a disturbing and disgusting video. Although I saw but a small portion of the lengthy video, I was scarred enough by the images to last me for quite some time. Needless to say, that performance and video sparked multiple interviews and appearances and discussions throughout every form of media. The nation has become obsessed with Miley, who was once a Disney child actress with a pure reputation. Seemingly, Miley (and or her agents) have capitalized upon her new-found fame and put her out there at every opportunity to exploit her as a sexual object and superstar performer. Unfortunately, the nation has positively lobbed on to Miley’s sexploits (if you will) which has led to other female performers to follow Miley’s lead such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears.
As a Messianic or Netzerene, we are called to standards of living that may seem strange and senseless to the secular world and even fundamental Christianity. This perception moment is not intended to demonize Miley and those like her in the entertainment industry. How they live their lives is their choice and ultimately they must answer to the Creator for the life they live. The purpose of this perception moment is to examine me and my relationship with the Creator.
The healthy carnal male is naturally attracted to the female body. The Creator intended for man to have this affinity for women for the purposes of him (men) finding a mate, marrying, bearing children, and living happily ever after as a couple. CJB Genesis 2:24 This is why a man is to leave his father and mother and stick with his wife, and they are to be one flesh. (Gen 2:24 CJB) CJB Matthew 19:5 and that he said, ‘For this reason a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two are to become one flesh’? (Mat 19:5 CJB) CJB Mark 10:7 For this reason, a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife,CJB 1 Corinthians 7:39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives, but if the husband dies she is free to marry anyone she wishes, provided he is a believer in the Lord. (1Co 7:39 CJB) (Mar 10:7 CJB) Beyond finding one’s soul mate and being married to them, that desire and impulse in men must be systematically controlled–CJB 1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, get your minds ready for work, keep yourselves under control, and fix your hopes fully on the gift you will receive when Yeshua the Messiah is revealed. (1Pe 1:13 CJB); DBY Colossians 3:2 have your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth; (Col 3:2 DBY).
For me, I’m learning that control comes by several ways: (1) Restricting what I expose my mind and eyes to–by my tuning in to that YouTube video of Miley Cyrus, I was exposing my eyes and my mind to images that are carnal in nature. Even though I was just curious as to what all the hooplah about Miley was (i.e., innocent intentions), I should have known that I would be exposed to images that would be seared in my conscience. I may not act upon such images and the experience, but my mind may be distracted away from that which I should always be focused. The old adage, out of sight–out of mind–is so appropriate here. That brings to mind the second control item–DBY Mark 8:33 But he, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, Get away behind me, Satan, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men. (Mar 8:33 DBY) DBY Romans 8:5 For they that are according to flesh mind the things of the flesh; and they that are according to Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (Rom 8:5 DBY) Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness. (2) Constantly staying focused on spiritual matters–CJB 1 Thessalonians 4:11 Also, make it your ambition to live quietly, to mind your own business and to earn your living by your own efforts- just as we told you. (1Th 4:11 CJB). CJB Ephesians 4:23 and you must let your spirits and minds keep being renewed, (Eph 4:23 CJB) DBY Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Rom 12:2 DBY) (3) Love my wife as Messiah loves the Church and confer all my affection and desires. Our mates are gifts from the Father above and our affections and desires should be expressly restricted to her and her alone–25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. (Eph 5:25-31 KJV). (4) Maintain a wholesome and clean heart at all time–Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (5) Living a holy life that is wholly and acceptable to the Father–that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; (1Ti 2:2-3 KJV) . (6) Resist the tugs and pulls of this world in all carnal areas of life–ESV James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you (Jam 4:7 ESV) 1Jo 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
I believe with my whole heart and mind that the Messianic is compelled to comply with the tenets of Scripture in every aspect of life. In other words, my life is not my own (CJB 1 Corinthians 6:20 for you were bought at a price. So use your bodies to glorify God. (1Co 6:20 CJB); CJB 1 Corinthians 7:23 You were bought at a price, so do not become slaves of other human beings. (1Co 7:23 CJB)) and thus I must obey every applicable aspect of God’s Law that governs a believer’s life. Am I perfect. I most certainly am not. But I am constantly seeing areas of my life daily that I realize must change and I take action to correct those deficient areas…through the agency of the Holy Spirit and a determined mind to please and obey the Father.
